Trump 28 is played with 32 cards (J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7 of each suit). Four players form two teams, sitting opposite their partners. Each player receives 4 cards initially, then 4 more after bidding.
Cards rank differently than standard games: J(3), 9(2), A(1), 10(1), K(0), Q(0), 8(0), 7(0). The total points in the deck equal 28 - hence the name! Teams aim to win tricks containing point cards.
Players bid for the right to choose trump. Minimum bid is 14 (half of 28). The highest bidder's team must score at least their bid to win. Higher bids mean higher risk but greater rewards!
The bidding winner leads first. Players must follow suit if possible. The highest card of the led suit wins unless trumped. Trump cards beat all other suits. Winner leads the next trick.
The trump suit remains secret initially! The bidder sets trump face-down. Trump is revealed only when a player cannot follow suit and requests to see it. This adds exciting strategic depth.
After all 8 tricks, points are counted. If the bidding team meets or exceeds their bid, they score the difference. If they fall short, opponents score the bid amount. First team to reach the target wins!
